Orange Juice used to prevent or treat colds:
Linus Pauling advocated huge of Vitamin C to prevent and treat upper respiratory infections beginning in 1970’s. The Cochrane review of “placebo-controlled trials involving 11,350 participants pointed out that regular ingestion of vitamin C was not effective in preventing “colds.” The authors go on to say, trials of high doses of vitamin C administered therapeutically (starting after the onset of symptoms), showed no consistent effect on either duration or severity of symptoms…” Our daily Vitamin C requirement in between 60-100 mg.per day which is easily supplied in a normal diet. Bananas for “low potassium:”
Individuals not exercising outside and most healthy people do not need extra potassium. Adding a single banana a day adds 110 calories. Eating a banana supplies 350 mg. of potassium, which is about 1/6 of the possible potassium needs in a day. There is no “recommended daily allowance for potassium” since lack of potassium is so rare. The single banana with 110 calories can be replaced with two apples or oranges–more to eat and just as healthy. There are other fruits that have less sugar and many less calories.
If additional potassium is really needed, consider a potassium tablet pc which has 750 mg or more of potassium and zero calories.
Oat bran and barley for treatment of elevated cholesterol:
“2 or more cups a day every day to lower cholesterol by 7%” is what the ad says. However, everyone forgets to ask, how many calories is that? Well, with the milk it comes out to be 400 calories. That’s signficant, especially if you don’t like to eat it. Remember, you also need to eat it every day forever.
What’s important to remember, is that all of these foods have minimal health benefits. They have two serious problems: 1.They distract you way from better treatment of a medical problem, and 2.They add calories for little benefit. Many people really don’t like these foods anyway.
