Gossip Girl’s Season Three Heats Up Satellite TV
The new television season has arrived with the usual hits, misses, surprises and, of course, non-surprises. Oldies like Desperate Housewives are back, newbies like Glee are out, and old newbies like Melrose Place are here yet again. Despite the somewhat lackluster state of the economy, we haven’t entirely traded in that high definition satellite TV we have come to know and love.
This year, one series has made a quite notable return – Gossip Girl. In its third season, the WB drama has been forced to make the transition writers, producers, directors and actors of all teen-based programs fear and dread – the move from high school to college. Blair, Chuck, Serena and Dan have left Constance for the halls of higher education. And while such a transition in real life is tough, in television life, it is even tougher.
Writers and producers of Gossip Girl kept viewers guessing all last season, leading us on to believe that Yale (or Columbia disguised as Yale) would be the choice of these high-rolling New York teens. Nevertheless, fate (or show creators facing pressure to keep this New York based show in the city itself) intervened and – surprise – all of the major characters remained in New York City. Many headed to NYU, one went to Columbia, and a couple went nowhere at all.
Though the season is just a few episodes in, all signs point to the transition being quite a smooth one. Unlike its predecessors such as Saved By the Bell and The OC, Gossip Girl has managed to keep the main characters together in a way that is not overly-obvious or forced. Yes, Blair, Georgina and Vanessa did all end up on the same floor at NYU – but at least some of the coincidence came as a result of legitimate scheming.
As we move on in the season, it seems that more excitement is yet to come. With not-so-intriguing characters like Georgina, Scott and Bree basically out of the way, we can get to the juicier items on the menu. Will Serena’s elusive father reappear? Will Blair and Chuck make it? What will Jenny as queen of Constance be like, and how will producers resolve the Columbia as Yale turned Columbia as Columbia dilemma?
If you’re not a Gossip Girl fan yet, it’s time to start watching. Seasons one and two are available on DVD, so getting caught up won’t be too hard. You’ll soon be changing your satellite TV stations to catch the latest schemes and fashions on the WB on Monday nights.
By the looks of things, Gossip Girl won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. At least for now, ratings are stronger than ever, as are storylines and characters. The high school to College transition seems to have gone quite smoothly, meaning Serena, Blair, Chuck, Nate, Dan and all the others will keep entertaining us for a long time to come.
