Yucca Flower
Chef Jason Hill of www.CookingSessions.com shows how to make a yucca flower omelet recipe in this episode of “Chef Tips.” One of the desert’s most delicious wild foods, yucca flowers taste similar to the innermost tender leaves of an artichoke. These edible flowers bloom once a year in the spring — usually around April or May. The yucca flowers were an important wild food for the native Shoshone Indians and other inhabitants of desert regions. Yucca flowers can be found growing wild throughout the Southwest and Mexico, but they are also readily available in many Hispanic markets. In this edible flower recipe, Jason is using the petals from the Yucca Whipplei, also known as Our Lord’s Candle. My favorite flower (to eat) is the breaded squash flower. I eat once in South-France. I loved it.
this reminds me of eating primroses as a kid! but thats one big flower!
@ChefTips I have the WORST luck with picking wild things. I would probably find the only poisonous version. lol
@ChefTips Good deal. We could have a medicinal omelet on our hands.
this is such a coincidence that this video is posted!
a few days ago, me and my friend were going to go on a lil adventure finding edible flowers and plants to eat and we actually were looking up the yucca plant, and it so happens that it grows everywhere here in Texas!
thanx for the video and the information!
@SmokeyGoodness Thanks! These were the Our Lord’s Candle (yucca whipplei). They are quite beautiful.
@bibbeny You’re welcome! I didn’t know about it until last year. Hope you have a chance to try them out! Cheers, Jason
@bibbeny Thanks!
@JFACfan16 In California, you can get them in some Mexican markets.
@grenadeserenade Good point. I’ll have to look it up!
@kaikahitonari Squash blossoms are amazing. I like them stuffed with goat cheese!
@jami3r00 Thanks. You’re too kind!
@beatricexox I haven’t tried them raw. I think each edible flower has its own flavor. These yucca flowers were quite mild and nice.
@jingabobo Yes, I thought it would be fun to do something different. We were driving by these amazing flowers, so we shot the video on a whim. Glad you enjoyed it!
@fezan84 Thanks! That was the Mojave Desert.
@TheFaustianMan Why?
@ChipNick87 Yes, always check to make sure the plant is edible. You don’t want to end up in the hospital! Thanks for the kind comment! Cheers, Jason
@1fanger Sounds wonderful!
We used to go to Lavalette NJ on weekends and a friend who lived there made snapper blues (that`s young bluefish) with fried squash flowers one night for our supper which was great!
We have red yuccas growing in our backyards. I don’t know if they’re edible or not, but now that I’ve seen this i’ll look it up! Great video!
